The famous Bay of Palma dealt the armada with over 800 boats competing at the 47th Trofeo Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR a full range of different breezes. At the first regatta of the European circuit, sixteen Magic Marine teams competed in Palma in 7 different classes with fluctuating results.
Big winners of the event are Billy Besson and Marie Riou in the Nacra 17 class who won the title in the catamaran class and won the overall price of the best performance at the regatta.
‘We are working towards Rio and every result is important, but the finishing place is also a big thing, at this stage it is more about how we sail, trying to do the best job on board each and every day. That is what we are trying to do. But you can never be perfect, you keep trying.’ stated Besson.
The Dutch 470 Womens team Afrodite Kyranakou & Anneloes van Veen finished the event in fifth place but had a tough day during the medal race.
‘We started too early which made us go back. We had some changes in the medal race but didn’t take them all. We are happy with our progress and set some new goals. We have two rest day ahead an after that we start preparing for the Europeans later this month. We were closer to a medal than ever before but we keep fighting!’.
Laser sailor Wannes van Laer sailed to his best result ever, he finished 5th in the Laser Standerd field.
‘I’m very satisfied after this regatta, I found back the feeling in the boat and I realise that everything should come together to win, this needs to be during the Olympics in Rio. It was a week full of changing conditions and therefore for all round sailors so I’m happy to be able to compete with the best sailors in the class.’
All teamriders are now preparing for the upcoming events. All laser sailors are getting ready for their World Championships in Mexico where the 49er sailors are heading to Barcelona for the European Championships. The last week of April the biggest part of the team will be in Hyeres, France for the World Cup.
We will keep you updated again on the results of our teams!
